Expressive Self-Portraits

This page is an example for an combined 11th and 12th grade portfolio class.

Unit Goal

After looking at a variety of portraits students will create an expressive self-portrait. The students will learn the techniques to use when working with charcoal and acrylic paint. Students will express an emotion with artwork through the use of color, value, and line. Upon completion of the unit the class will participate in a critique.

Requirements for Self-Portrait

- The head must be tilted or turned. (The figure in the image should not be looking straight at the viewer.)
- Show the figure from at least the mid-torso up.
- Include a background; this background should include a window or passage way.
- Use predominantly warm OR cool colors.
- Express and emotion or mood in your painting.
